Note: Dated 1965, Zhang Daqian likely executed this work before or after his solo exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery, London, during which his oeuvre was already marked by the 'splashed-ink-and-colour' style. This is a technical tour de force of 'splashed ink' evoking the refreshing charm of mountains and trees. Abbreviated brushstrokes denoting the bridge, small huts and scholars are typical of Zhang Daqian's artistic representation. Eddie En Po Tseng worked in London at the Central News Agency's Europe Bureau during this period, suggesting that Zhang Daqian must have specially painted this work as a gift to him.
