款識：有云世無君子不養小人，何況鼠子嚼燭偷油非大害也，予故能收入畫冊。戊子（1948）八十八歲白石。
鈐印：齊璜、星塘白屋不出公卿

齊白石總是選取民間百姓喜聞樂見的題材入畫，「老鼠偷蠟油」詼諧有趣，一鼠立於燈下，做注視狀，仿佛立刻爬上燈台。右上題識為畫面的註解，寫此以寓「君子不養小人」之理。齊白石曾刻有「無君子不養小人」的印章。

此作繪於戊子年齊白石八十八嵗時，這一時期，齊白石的畫興勃發，筆墨和格調更加自如、簡潔，創作了許多精品。直至年末，華北戰雲彌漫。很多人勸他離開北平南下。歷經世事離亂的齊白石仍然決定留居北平，並以詩答曰：「北房南屋少安居，何處清平著老夫。」
