A rare ivory anatomical model of a pregnant woman, German, late 17th century,

attributed to Stephan Zick (1639-1715), the reclining figure with distinctive period hair and high forehead, the left arm hinged at the shoulders and front torso section removing to reveal models of the lungs, womb and embryo,

Footnotes

These very rare demonstrational models were supposedly used in lecturing to medical students. The Wellcome Collection, London has an ivory standing anatomical model of a pregnant woman in the classical style.

Stephan Zick (1639-1715) was born in Nuremberg into a family of ivory carvers and it is thought it was he who originated these miniature anatomical models.

Many of Zick's known figures come lying in a coffin-shaped cases and some have raised arms to cover their faces that sometime are carved smiling.
