SOUTHGATE, the crystal set in original fabric covered mahogany case with compartment in the lid for housing spare crystals and with printed set of instructions and compartment for mounting a pocket watch, the case 14in (36cm) wide

These Mark III Short Wave Tuners were used by the Royal Flying Corps ground stations during the later part of the First World War to receive Morse Code Messages for airmen flying above enemy trenches. These messages then were given to the artillery batteries who could then direct their gunfire accordingly.
