Gilt brass plaque of a table of the planetary rulers of the hours, German, Dated 1574,

in the shape of a horn-book. A heading on the obverse of the plate explains its purpose 'Daffel den Regiersvng der Blaneten/ nach den Vngleichen stvnden des tags' (Table of the planetary rulers for the unequal hours of the day). Beneath this is the table, which gives the planetary ruler, indicated by its astronomical / astrological symbol, of each unequal hour of the day throughout a week. The reverse gives similar information for the night hours. On each side a key to the planetary symbols is given beneath the table. The maker of the object clearly had a somewhat limited set of punches being obliged to use a 'D' for an upper case T, and 'B' for P, while 'S' and 'N', are systematically stamped backwards. 3 1/2 x 2 ins (8.5cm x 5.4cm)
