A George III 18 carat gold snuff box,

maker's mark of George Cowdery over striking that of another, London 1801
Rectangular with rounded edges, finely engraved with a chequer board of alternating linear and pellet decoration, the underside of the cover engraved "FMGM,, with red leather carrying case, labelled in pen "Dean of York's Box given to him by Lady M", length 6.8cm, weight 82.5gms.

Provenance:
By descent from The Dean of York, The Very Reverend George MARKHAM (1763-1822), second son of William Markham, Archbishop of York from 1776 to 1807 and brother to Frederica Markham (1774-1860). Frederica married David William Murray, 3rd Earl of Mansfield, (1777-1840), becoming Countess of MANSFIELD. Hence, the FMGM initials to the interior of the box and the pen inscription to the exterior of the carrying case.
