An 18th century French gold, tortoiseshell and lac burgauté snuff box

with a fleur de lys mark to the rim, possibly the discharge mark of Etienne de Bouges, tax fermier from 1717-22
Rectangular, the cover set with a tortoiseshell panel decorated in inlaid gold wire and pellets and abalone shell with a central stylised scallop shell vase surrounded by tumbling flowers within a scalloped border, the reeded gold hinge mount with engraved foliate scroll decoration, the underside with similar tortoiseshell panel, length 8.2cm.

A snuff box with similar mark and channel engraved foliate decoration to the gold mounts from the Ortiz-Patiño and Burton Collections, was sold these rooms 18 June 2014, ex-lot 2. That box was published by Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Snuff Boxes of Paris, A Catalogue of the J Ortiz Patiño Collection (London 1974), cat. no. 2.
