Footnotes

David Teniers the Younger (d.1690), who was the son of David Teniers the elder, became maitre in the gild of Antwerp in 1633. Arcduke Leopold William, governor of the Netherlands, elevated him to court painter in 1647 and this led to worldwide commissions, including a large number from Phillipe of Spain.
Renowned for capturing everyday scenes his paintings were adopted by Flemish weavers in response to the successful pastoral Aubusson tapestries of the 17th century.
