A French mid-18th century Louis XV gilt-bronze mounted kingwood and tulipwood bombé commode by Jean Charles Ellaume, Paris

the serpentine stepped grey marble top above three short drawers and two long drawers, the front angles with scrolling foliate clasps, on scrolling foliate-cast splayed feet, the carcass stamped under the marble JME/ J.C. Ellaume, 132cm wide, 56cm deep, 85.5cm high (51 1/2in wide, 22in deep, 33 1/2in high).

Jean-Charles Ellaume, maître in 1754.
Although the dates of his birth and death are unrecorded it is known that Jean-Charles Ellaume was received as a maître-ébéniste in 1754 and worked for more than 30 years from his Parisian workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. His work was of the finest quality, ornamented with intricate veneers and superb gilt bronze mounts.
His furniture is included in the collections of the Château de Morlanne and Vendeuvre, the Château Royal de Wawel in Krakow, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bernay.
