each depicting a fruit and flower-filled fountain within a trompe-l'oeil arched landscape, 195cm wide, 337cm high (76 1/2in wide, 132 1/2in high). (2)
Footnotes
The Liège master Paul-Joseph Carpay (1822-1892) studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Liège. Having worked with French painters to decorate a theatre, Carpay turned to decorative painting. During his long career he decorated churches, châteaux, town houses, private buildings and hôtels particuliers.

This pair of canvases are by Marius Engalière (1824 – 1857). They were commissioned for the Château d'Estretefond near Toulouse in France. A pupil of Auguste Aubert, Marius Engalière travelled widely, working in Marseille on development projects for the Pharo district, then moving to Toulouse and visiting Andalusia, where he painted many landscapes. He participated at the Salons between 1853 and 1857, mainly showing views of Spain. His art is exhibited at museums in Carcassonne, Marseille, Narbonne and Toulouse.
