the seated Virgin clad in an elaborate draped mantel, the Christ Child standing on her lap, with unusual tiered, arcaded back, with associated gilt bronze crown, 65cm wide, 33cm deep, 114cm high (25 1/2in wide, 12 1/2in deep, 44 1/2in high)

Footnotes

Provenance:
Hartmann Collection
Sotheby's London, 7 April 1987, lot 40. Purchased by the current vendor.

A comparable large stone figure of the Virgin and Child is in the Cleveland Museum of Art. This figure came from the Church of Mariapfarr in the Diocese of Salzburg and is slightly earlier in date. The numerous intricate folds of drapery are apparent in both figures, falling in stylised folds to the integral plain base. The Cleveland Museum Madonna was made using a stone composite cast in a mould known as 'Lost Shape'. This involved pouring ground up limestone, quick lime and milk curd into a mould, leaving it for weeks to dry and then breaking up the mould to reveal the figure within, which would then be polished and painted.
