A late 19th century French silver and mother of pearl extensive table service of flatware and cutlery, in a canteen box
marks for Gustave Leroy and Cie, with first standard Minerva mark, 1896 - 1897
Double struck, shaped rococo cartouche terminals with trailing flowers, thread edge, the heels further embellished with flowers and scrolls, the reverse of the terminals with applied script initial, comprising: thirty-six table forks, twenty-four table spoons, eighteen dessert forks, seventeen dessert spoons (with one matched example), eighteen tea spoons, twenty-four table knives and eighteen dessert knives, with mother of pearl handles and steel blades, stamped, JULES PIAULT PARIS, together with eighteen further dessert knives with silver blades. The unmarked ferrules and capped terminals chased with cornucopia among flowering acanthus scrolls, together with the following serving implements with mother of pearl handles: a butter knife, engraved silver blade, a sifting spoon, a serving fork, a small slice with pierced blade, a pair of fish servers, with engraved silver blades and tines, a carving knife and fork with steel blades and the following silver implements: a salad fork and spoon, partially gilded, a sifter spoon, two sauce ladles, a soup ladle, a preserve spoon and a slice, with ornate engraved bowls.
All contained in an oak canteen box with brass corners and hinged campaign handles, pieces fitted into four fitted lift-out trays, weight of weighable silver 268oz. (190)
