A gimballed ship's barometer,

by Pyefinch, London. Mahogany case with glass door and silvered scale reading from 27-31ins., fitted with sliding vernier. A circular aneroid barometer above. The brass reservoir inscribed: HMS Newcastle-on-Tyne 1832, broken up 1859 (sic). 39.5ins.(100cm)long.

HMS Newcastle was actually a 50 gun fourth Rate Frigate, built as a spar deck Frigate to counter the threat of the newer American figates during the War of 1812. Constructed at Blackwall by Wigrams and launched in 1813, Newcastle and her sister ship Leander were quickly built in softwood and operated successfully in the Squadrons pursuing the American vessels duirng the War. She then served as the Flagship on the North American Station until 1822, after which she was employed as a Lazarette in England until sold for breaking in 1850.
