Yachting III A portfolio of original late 19th century yachting photographs,

including work by Alfred John West (1857-1937) of Gosport and Southsea, Symonds of Portsmouth and Adamson of Rothesay. Generally albumen prints 9x11ins(23x28cm) most with blind stamped signatures and identified with manuscript or pasted labels. Mounted onto individual boards approximately 12x15ins.(30x38cm). 33 boards with 35 prints. In a blue leather slip case. 13.5x17x2.5ins.(34x43x6.5cm)

Provenance:
From the collection of Johan Vincent Wentzel (1865-1919) a prominent Hamburg estate agent.

Alfred West, together with his brother George was one of the early pioneers of yachting photography, working initially from Gosport and latterly Southsea. He recorded many of the craft to be seen in the Solent during the great age of Yachting. He subsequently moved into motion pictures and made a notable film of the famous steam yacht Turbinia. His still photograph collection was sold to Beken of Cowes in 1913.

Yachts depicted include: Britannia, Aline, Valkyrie, Shamrock I, Shamrock II, Meteor I, Wendur & Galatea.
