A Danish porcelain "Elsinore" ship portrait bowl

Depicting on each side of the bowl an English three masted Barque in a gilded cartouche, with gold banding and flower decoration. The interior with a decorative spray of flowers. 11ins.(28cm)diam.

Footnotes

In the 19th century it was common practice for agents at the port of Helsingor, or Elsinore, to commission portrait bowls which were given as gifts to visiting ship's Captains, perhaps as an incentive to use their services.

The additional decoration of flowers inside the bowl is unusual, perhaps this was intended as a gift for the Captain's wife.
