A stag antler manju netsuke of Shoki and oni

Asakusa style, late 18th century
The two eternal enemies standing side by side within a billowing unfurling kakemono, Shoki clasping his beard as he glowers down at the oni, whose face crumples in dismay as he makes a futile attempt to hide his horns with one hand, the antler is slightly worn and has acquired a rich patina, unsigned. 4.2cm (1 5/8in).

Footnotes

Provenance: Richard R. Silverman collection.
