Four wood figural netsuke

Edo, 19th century
The first of Hanasaka Jiji seated on a dead tree stump, holding his bowl of magic seeds as ivory blossoms start to appear, signed on an ivory tablet Ryumin, 3.8cm (1½in); the second of a boy playing a flute seated on a grazing ox on a base, inscribed Tomotada, 4.5cm (1¾in); the third of Daruma seated in meditation, signed Shumin, 3.5cm (1 3/8in); the fourth of a blind man trying to lift his huge distended scrotum, signed on a metal tablet Issan, 3.5cm (1 3/8in).
