Decorated in gold, silver and slight-coloured takamakie with a continuous design of nine sparrows in flight among a bamboo forest in winter, the shoulder and foot covered with a simulated thick blanket of snow melting over the bamboo leaves, the neck lacquered with a band of stylised flowers, with discrete details embellished in kirikane, the interior of rich nashiji; signed Hokkyo Komin saku with seal Komin; with wood storage box. 31.5cm (12 3/8in) high. Footnotes
Nakayama Komin was a distinguished lacquerer who worked in Edo and learnt the art from Hara Yoyusai (1772-1845). Like Yoyusai and other 19th-century lacquer artists including Koma Kansai and Zeshin, he turned to famous early masterpieces of Japanese lacquer for inspiration.
