Kawakita Kaho (1875-1940)

Taisho/Showa Period
A six-fold screen, in ink and colour on silk, depicting a Spring scene of a forest of tall cedar and yamazakura (mountain cherry) trees, three birds perched on the branches in the upper middle section, signed Kaho with seal Kaho. 185.7cm x 377.8cm (73 1/8in x 148¾in).

Footnotes

Born in Kyoto, Kawakita Kaho was a painter in the traditional Japanese-style and a pupil of Kono Bairei (1844-1895) and later, of Kikuchi Hobun (1862-1918). He frequently exhibited at the Bunten shows and won several prizes. He often painted scenes from Japanese legends in a mixture of the later Shijo-style and Western realism.
