An ivory netsuke of a cockerel and chick

By Okatomo, Kyoto, circa 1800
The former with a chick nestling against its left side, standing on a small straw hat, a head of millet lying beside them with a leaf sweeping beneath the hat to provide the himotoshi, all the eyes inlaid in horn, signed in a rectangular reserve Okatomo. 3.8cm (1½in).

Footnotes

Meinertzhagen illustrates two netsuke with similar cockerels (MCI, p.617), but the present lot may well be a unique composition in this combination of elements.
