An ivory netsuke of a puppy

By Okatomo, Kyoto, circa 1800-1820
The plump puppy chewing at the cord attached to an awabi shell, resting one paw on the shell to hold it steady as he concentrates on his task, his right forepaw raised, the hair work lightly stained and his eyes inlaid in dark horn, signed in a rectangular reserve Okatomo. 3.8cm (1½in).
