Seated asleep in a typical attitude, her head resting on one hand and her legs drawn in for compactness, her long hair flowing down the back of her robe which is engraved with formal designs, the wood is slightly worn and bears a good patina, signed in a rectangular reserve Masamori. 3.5cm (1 3/8in).

The maker's work is apparently unrecorded, except for a reference by Neil K. Davey, Netsuke, a Comprehensive Study Based on the M. T. Hindson Collection, Faber & Faber Ltd and Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications, London, 1974, p.491 to a sleeping shojo of the Nagoya school, previously in the collections of Frederick Meinertzhagen and W. W. Winkworth. However, it is not recorded in The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum, Alan R. Liss, Inc., New York, 1986, or in his book, The Art of the Netsuke Carver, Routledge and Kegan Paul, London, 1956.
