Acquired by the present owner from the above

One of the most prolific painters among the Pennsylvania Impressionists, Walter Emerson Baum was one of the only artists in the New Hope Art Colony to actually be born in Bucks County. He began his formal training at the age of twenty, first studying with William Trego, and then going on to enroll in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied with notable artists such as Thomas Anshutz, William Merrit Chase and Cecila Beaux, among others. Inspired by the original painters of the 'New Hope School' and their regional landscapes, Baum was later influenced by French Post-Impressionists, his style shifting dramatically from the 1940s into the 1950s to include urban scenes and still lifes. A great influence on artists throughout the Delaware River Valley, Baum was also an active educator, going on to co-found the Kline-Baum School of Art in 1929 - later re-named the Baum School of Art - and the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1946.
