PROVENANCE:
Sir Eric Maclagan
Thence by family descent

In 1917 Gill made a wood engraving of a crucifix (5 x 3 1/4 in.), which he stated was copied from a crucifix in a window at York Minster.

Gill then used this crossed leg pose of the dead Christ in two further works; firstly a headstone for John Edwin Nye, which he carved in November 1917, and then in the crucifix scene in the Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral, the latter was carved during February and March 1918.

Sir Eric Maclagan, the first owner of this work, was Director of the V&A Museum (1924-1945).

We are grateful to Dr Judith Collins for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
