PROVENANCE:
Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner

Paolozzi's Mondrian heads of the early 1990s are a continuation of the artist's exploration of fractious portrait busts which can be considered as meditations on the condition of being. Paolozzi would often strike a dialogue between his own practice and art works from those he admired, one such example being the minimalist New York works of Piet Mondrian. The present work and related series are informed specifically by Mondrian's 1940s Broadway Boogie-Woogie masterpieces in which the pulsing lights of the city streets are interpreted into abstract compositions. Here the concept is re-interpreted by Paolozzi and projected onto an anonymous head, the outcome is at once an abstract notion, a figural form and an acknowledgment of art history.
