As a conscientious objector, early in 1941 Vaughan was drafted to serve as a labourer in the Pioneer Corps, based initially in Wiltshire and Derbyshire and in 1943 he was transferred north to a Prisoner of War camp based in Malton, North Yorkshire. Here his ability to speak German was employed as an interpreter and here he remained until his demobilisation in 1946.
It was during this period, presumably on a crisp winter's day in 1945, that Vaughan will have walked the eight miles north from camp through the rolling Yorkshire hills before arriving on this view overlooking Pickering to paint the present work.
