A painting by Casali of the same subject was on the art market in Vicenza in 1997. The latter painting, of larger dimensions, follows a similar composition; the figures take up broadly the same poses but there are differences in the landscape and in the position of the putto.
Upon completing his training with Sebastiano Conca and Francesco Trevisani, the Roman born Andrea Casali received important commissions in his native city from figures such as Pope Benedict XVIV and Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and also from patrons abroad. In 1741 he left Rome for England where he was to remain for 25 years until his return in 1766.
We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci for confirming the attribution to Casali, on the basis of a colour photograph.
