PROVENANCE
Acquired by the present owner's family in Paris in the 1920s and thence by descent
After being apprenticed to the Beaubrun family of painters Renard de Saint André, was, on his marriage in 1646, described as 'peintre ordinaire de la Royne' and later as 'peintre ordinaire du roi et de la reine'. He painted portraits of Anne of Austria, Marie-Thérèse and Louis XIV but is also celebrated for a number of distinctive Vanitas still lifes. The present work is typical of a group of still lifes on canvas on the same scale, which incorporate a number of the same elements: in particular, the coral, the specific shells and what appears to be the same volume which shares the same typeface (in other instances showing the title pages, LIVRE PREMIER DE L'IMITATION DE NOSTRE SEIGNEUR JESUS CHRIST and LIVRE SECOND PREMIER DE L'IMITATION DE NOSTRE SEIGNEUR JESUS CHRIST).
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for suggesting an alternative attribution to Carstian Luyckx (Antwerp 1623-1677). Many of the still lifes previously attributed to Renard de Saint Andre are now considered to be the work of Luyckx.
