Footnotes

PROVENANCE
Charlie Anderson, The Domino Club, 25 Trinity Place, San Francisco

While the present painting has been hitherto unrecorded, Luti is known to have painted two other versions of this particular composition (oil on canvas, 48 x 36 cm., Lemme Collection, inv. CL62; and on canvas of unknown dimensions, previously with Clovis Whitfield. See: R. Maffeis, Benedetto Luti L'Ultimo Maestro, Florence, 2010, cat. no. II. 22, p. 306, ill.). Of the three paintings the present work is the only one that is signed and it contains greater detail than the others.

Charlie Anderson collected paintings and his collection of nudes was one of the finest in San Francisco. They were displayed in his club, The Domino Club, where resident artist Roberto Lupetti could be seen painting a live female nude model for the amusement and entertainment of members.
