PROVENANCE
Hotel Royal de Savoy, Lausanne since the 1960s

The attribution to Niccolò Guardi was confirmed by Dario Succi upon firsthand inspection of the painting (private communication 8 March 2010). He suggests a date of circa 1745 for the picture.

The present painting takes in the same view as that in Carlevarijs's engraving in his Le Fabbriche e Vedute di Venezia of 1703 (plate 49). Succi notes the rapid brushwork and the distinctive brownish tonality as distinguishing The Piazzetta, Venice as a work of Niccolò Guardi.
