the hull built up in wood lifts, with a large band at the top representing the gunwale, and detailed with a soft "ram" bow and rounded transom, with skeg and rudder profiles. Displayed on a painted black backboard with the name lettered in gold at the center bottom.

U.S.S. San Francisco, a 4088-ton protected cruiser built at Union Iron Works in San Francisco, CA. and was commissioned in November 1890. She served in the Pacific until 1893, and then steamed to the Atlantic. Operations followed in the North and South Atlantic, and European waters. During the Spanish-American War she was stationed off Cuba. In 1908-1911, she was converted into a mine layer, one of the Navy's first specialized mine vessels, and assisted in laying the North Sea Mine Barrage during World War I. The U.S.S. San Francisco was decommissioned in December 1921. In reserve at Philadelphia Navy Yard for many years thereafter, the ship was renamed Yosemite in 1931 and was sold for scrapping in April 1939.
