A pale shibuichi tsuba

Attributed to Morikawa Masakage (died c.1875), Tanaka School, 19th century
Of rounded rectangular form with raised rim, carved and inlaid with a scene of long life, showing cranes and a minogame around Mount Horai, details in gold, silver and shakudo takazogan, signed Hojusai Masakage with kao on reverse. 7cm (2¾in).

For the maker, see Haynes, Index, no.H04059. He was apprenticed to Tanaka Kiyotoshi, Toshikage and Yoshikage and is acknowledged as the best of the later members of the school.
