A fine wood netsuke of a ningyo (mermaid)

By Tadatoshi (circa 1770-1840), Nagoya, late 18th/early 19th century
Lying, curled to the left and clutching her tail around her body to form a compact composition in slightly-worn and well-patinated wood, signed with ukibori characters in a rectangular reserve Tadatoshi. 4.1cm (1 5/8in).
