A stag-antler netsuke of a shishi

By Ozaki Kokusai (1835-1894), Shiba, Tokyo, late 19th century
Recumbent, its body curled to the left and snarling as it rests one foreleg possessively on a koro, on an oval base carved and pierced beneath with swirling clouds and the sides with a formal design, signed in a simplified manner Kokusai. 3.5cm (1 3/8in).

Footnotes

鹿角彫根付 獅子に香炉 銘「谷齋」 19世紀後期

The signature is engraved in a whimsical manner utilising only the top two strokes of Koku and the three vertical strokes of sai, incorporated in one character. For another example of this style of signature, see George Lazarnick, ibid., p.651.
