A wood netsuke of a shishi

By Tanaka Minko (1735-1816) Tsu, early 19th century
Seated, its raised forelegs braced as if about to rise, its body twisted slightly to the left as it scratches its ear with one hind paw and its tail trailing beneath to form the himotoshi, the slightly-worn wood bears a good patina and the eyes are inlaid with brass, signed Minko with kao. 4.5cm (1¾in).
