The male parent seated, stroking the back of his offspring, which stands leaning forward, astride its father's left leg, the unstained ivory is of a good colour and the eyes are of amber with dark pupils, signed Kaigyokusai with seal Masatsugu. 3.3cm (1¼in).

The snow-monkeys of Japan are macaques and, like other species of monkey, are sociable creatures and enjoy mutual touching. Here, the parent is gently stroking the back of his child, to pacify it with the expectation that it will eventually fall asleep.
