A Doccia stampino dish, circa 1750
The moulded rim with a band of Asian flowers enclosing a bouquet of flowers including chrysanthemum, fuchsias, tulips and carnations, 21.5cm (flat chip to the back of the rim)

The 'a stampa' or 'a stampino' designs that proved so popular at the Doccia factory were developed during the factory's first period. The factory records reveal that between 1747-1763 the painter Bastiano Buonamici, called 'il Micio', was asked to develop the 'stampe' or cut-out designs for these kinds of pieces. It appears that the basis for the flower garlands can be found in real flowers that were copied as cut-outs onto copper plates. A letter from Gaspero Bruschi and Jacopo Fanciullacci to Carlo Ginori in 1755 suggests that the technique was still being developed: 'Micio fa le prove dei rami con i fiori per i tondini (...). Riceverà un libro di fiori che non paion cattivi, per copiarsi nel rame' [Micio is doing the tests with flowers for the roundels in copper. He will receive a book with flowers that seem suitable to be copied in copper] (Biancalana 2009, p.147).
