A South Italian maiolica pharmacy vase, probably Palermo, early 17th century
Of baluster shape with a spreading base and waisted neck, painted in bright colours with a series of decorative friezes including bands of scrolling oak leaves in orange and yellow against blue or green grounds, a leaping lion concealed within one of the scrolls, a reserved panel on the front painted with a saint, probably St Anthony of Padua, holding a lily, dressed in brown robes against a yellow ground, 37cm high (some restoration)
