LITERATURE:
F. Pedrocco, 'Qualche novità per Antonio, Francesco e Nicolò Guardi' in Arte Viva, 1994, 5, ill. p. 56

The present work was published in 1994 by Pedrocco, who dates it to the end of the fourth decade of the eighteenth century, a period when the artist was executing a number of commissions for his most significant patron, Marshal Matthias von der Schulenburg. It is an example of the 'character heads' which were fashionable at this time with Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and his pupils.
