PROVENANCE:
With Gooden and Fox, London, 1965
The Property of a Nobleman, Sale, Sotheby's, London, 16 December 1999, lot 107 (sold for £67,000)

LITERATURE:
Hans-Ulrich Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen Maler und Zeichner (Augsburg, 1991), p. 385, cat. no. 1076, ill.

A number of Cornelis van der Schalcke's landscapes, with their yellowish-grey tones, resemble those of Jan van Goyen, but he was by no means an imitator of the better-known artist, conveying a distinctive light and atmosphere to the best of his works, as can be seen in the present panel.
