Footnotes

PROVENANCE:
Acquired from John Mitchell and Son in the late 1970s by the present owner's father and thence by family descent

Thomas Jones is one of a select group of eighteenth century Welsh artists of international significance. Most renowned today as a painter of highly individual, studies depicting buildings in Naples, during his lifetime he was most celebrated for his exhibited landscape paintings in the style of Richard Wilson. It was only following the publication of his Memoirs in 1951, after which a group of previously unknown oil sketches and watercolours came on to the market that his astonishingly personal and vibrant vision of the Welsh and Italian landscape was revealed to and appreciated by connoisseurs, so that his work is now represented throughout British and American collections.
