Antwerp School, 17th Century

Soldiers on horseback with travellers before a panoramic battlefield on the coast of the Low Countries

oil on panel
53 x 80.4cm (20 7/8 x 31 5/8in).

Footnotes

The present composition is typical of the aerial depictions of sieges and battlefields, recording the most important events of the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), for which Pieter Snayers amd Pieter van der Meulen were particularly well-known. These views were highly appreciated by such patrons as Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand and Archduke Leopold William and their aristocratic circle at the Brussels court.

The topography of the landscape shown in the present painting suggests a possible location in the vicinity of 's-Hertogenbosch, the Habsburg's main stronghold in the Netherlands, which was captured by the Dutch Republican army under Stadtholder Frederick Henry in 1629.
