A pair of red lacquer hokai (covered food container) and covers

19th century
Of ribbed, circular form, supported on four tall spreading feet, covered on the exterior and interior with bright vermilion lacquer, the removable covers, edges and feet mounted with chased brass mounts decorated with formal designs, the interior of plain red lacquer, unsigned. 43.5cm (17 1/8in) high; the covers 38cm (15 7/8in) diam.
