A fine tateage do tosei gusoku armour
Mid Edo Period, late 18th/19th century
The sixty-two-plate black-lacquered suji bachi kabuto signed Odawara Ju Yoshitsugu, on the front a red-and-gold-lacquered oni maedate (associated), the shikoro of Hineno style but flared out away from the neck, the fukigaeshi black-lacquered with a gilt copper katabami mon. A simple hambo black-lacquered with a black-lacquered yodarekake (associated) ko sode of russet-iron horizontal plates riveted together with gilt floral motifs repeated on each plate the two lower plates separately laced on. A fine russet-iron tateage ni mai do the joins in the plates overlaid by shaped plates in the style generally recognized as Namban the muna ita and lower two plates separately laced on, the muna ita decorated with a dragon the waki ita and oshitsuke no ita with waves in silver nunome, detachable leather itamono kusazuri, on the back a sashimono of gilded leather leaves. Black-lacquered iron tsutsu gote, kawara haidate and kara shino suneate. The shikoro, lower plates on the sode and do and the kusazuri all covered in gilded leather and laced in dark blue sugake odoshi. Contained in two armour boxes lacquered with the Katabami mon which are themselves housed in two lacquered-wood cages with folding lids. With separate stand.
