A composite armour
By Myochin Munechika, mid-late Edo Period, 18th/19th century
The helmet a one-piece uchidashi kabuto deeply embossed with a dragon, modern lining undisturbed, signed Nihon yuitsu kacchu ryoko Masuda Myochin Munechika kore wo tettan (Masuda Myochin Munechika premier armour maker made this). A ko manju jikoro with leather-covered fukigaeshi, menpo in russet iron with deeply embossed wrinkles and fitted with a three-lame yodarekake. The very good uchidashi gomai okegawa tateage do having the front plate boldly embossed with a dragon holding the sacred jewel, mune ita, waki ita and oshitsuke ita lacquered red, mounted with fine-quality shakudo kanamono, on the back an agemaki bow and an hinged bracket offset to the right shoulder probably for a banner. The kusazuri of red-lacquered kiritsuke kozane, ko sode matching the do the rivet heads on the kanamono with the mon in gilt. Oda gote with gilded plates, the two hyotan gane hinged to open, ikada haidate with gilded ikada and o tateage suneate in russet iron. Together with an armour box and stand.
