A collection of tosogu (sword fittings) contained in a lacquer cabinet

18th to 19th century
Comprising twenty-four kozuka, a futakoromono, twelve tsuba, twelve fuchi-gashira, thirteen pairs of menuki and a mae-kanagu.

The kozuka as follows:
Shakudo nanako, a traveller passing an old willow tree by a stream, in gold and silver takazogan, Goto School, unsigned.
Shakudo nanako, a courtier and servant in gold, silver and shakudo takazogan, Goto School, unsigned.
Shibuichi, engraved with Hotei in a boat, in katakiri, unsigned;
Shakudo nanako, richly inlaid with flowering prunus in gold and shakudo takazogan, unsigned.
Shibuichi, inlaid with a seated foreigner in gold, silver, copper and shakudo takazogan, unsigned.

Silver, engraved in kebori with a fan and horse-whip, signed Seikansai Kawano Yoshikuni with kao.
Shakudo nanako, inlaid with two birds and a berried tree, in gold, copper and shakudo takazogan, signed Tsurayuki with kao.
Brass, carved and inlaid with the ghost of a woman, signed Tadayuki.

The futakoromono (kozuka and kogai) of copper nanako, chickens in gold takazogan, signed Tsuji Masashige with kao.

The tsuba as follows:
Iron, of mokko form, carved and pierced in the manner of Hitotsuyanagi Tomoyoshi with a writhing dragon, signed Mito ju Hagiya Katsuhira with kao, 8.3cm (3¼in).
Shibuichi, finely carved and inlaid in iroe-takazogan with aquatic creatures, including a whale in shakudo with a gilt eye, an octopus with gilt eyes in copper and various fish in shibuichi swimming among breaking waves with inlaid gilt spray drops, Omori School, unsigned, 7.3cm (2 7/8in).
Shakudo ishime, carved in takabori and inlaid with Fujiyama towering over a pine copse, details in silver and gilt, signed Mitsutomi han, 7cm (2¾in).
Shibuichi, inlaid in iroe takazogan with Jo and Uba on the beach at Takasago, signed Masayuki, gyonen shichi-ju-ichi-o (an old man of 71), 6.7cm (2 5/8in).
Iron, carved and inlaid with Tawara Toda about to slay a dragon on a bridge, the reverse with birds flying past a pine copse, details of gold, silver and shakudo takazogan, signed Nara saku, 7.3cm (2 7/8in).
Iron, of large size, inlaid on the hammered ground with a large crab in copper takazogan, its eyes and pincers of shakudo, signed with a kao,8.3cm (3¼in).
Shakudo, the thick plate carved and pierced with an elaborate design of squirrels among grape vines, signed Kenkosai Kazutomo (Kazuaki), 7.3cm (2 7/8in).
Shakudo, carved and inlaid with a dragon among clouds, a falling tama on the reverse, details in gold takazogan, signed Rinsendo Hidemitsu, 7cm (2¾in).
Brass, inlaid in copper and gold takazogan and engraved with a horse standing beneath an old willow tree, Nara School, unsigned, 7cm (2¾in).
Shibuichi, carved in takabori and inlaid with chidori in flight over breaking waves in gold and silver takazogan, signed Aizan Yoshiyuki with kao, 6.7cm (2 5/8in).
Sentoku, carved and inlaid with Kanzan and Jittoku gazing at the reflection of the moon in a stream, details in gold and silver takazogan and honzogan, an old pine tree on the reverse, signed Issando Nagaharu, 7cm (2¾in).
Shakudo, bearing an ishime ground, carved and inlaid with an oni fleeing from an image of Shoki on a banner, a carp banner for the Boy's Festival on the reverse, in copper and shibuichi takazogan with gold and silver details, signed Chosendo Hidemitsu, 7.9cm (3 1/8in).

The mae-kanagu of silver with gold and shakudo details, in the form of Yojo stabbing King Chu's Bujutsu's cloak, unsigned.

All contained in a cabinet of six drawers, the exterior of mura-nashiji, the drop front with a panel of hirame, lacquered in gold and slight-coloured takamakie with four karako playing, and with chased silver mounts, the drawer fronts of roiro, lacquered in gold with a Chinese poem by Toho relating to the annual festival, Choyo (Chinese:Chung Yeung), held on September 9th each year. It is also known as Double Ninth Festival or Festival for the Elderly. Originated in the early Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.) in China, it is a day where Chinese families gather and respect their deceased ancestors. It is traditional to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum wine, wear the zhuyu plant or visit the graves of their ancestors, praying for longevity. 25.5cm x 33cm x 19.7cm (10in x 13in x 7¾in) (64).
