An unusual painted box and cover for kaiawase (the shell game)

Late Edo Period, 18th/19th century
Of deep hexagonal form, the light wood covered on all sides with paper and painted in ink and colours within clouds of painted gold, moulded in relief with key fret designs, the cover is decorated with a scene from the Utsusemi (chapter 3), the sides decorated with Kocho (chapter 24) and Nowaki (chapter 28) from the Genji Monogatari (the 'Tales of Genji'), the interior painted in gold with clouds; with wood storage box. 37.2cm x 32.5cm x 18.5cm (14 5/8cm x 12¾in x 7¼in).
