EXHIBITED
London, Institute of Contemporary Art, Paintings from the Damiano Collection, 1959
A friend of Lucio Fontana, with whom he signed the third Manifesto dello Spazialismo in 1950, Roberto Crippa was one of the first Italian artists to use gestural painting. In Spirali, his most important series, the artist's nearly circular but never perfectly round gestures create intense movements that seem to project the lines out of the pictorial space. This challenges the bidimensionality of the canvas, placing the work firmly in the Spatialist tradition.
