seal impression 'Viscount Valentia Bahadur Right Honourable Lord 1217' (verso),
pen and ink and watercolour
41 x 27.5cm (16 1/8 x 10 13/16in).

Footnotes

The seal impression is that of George Annesley, 2nd Earl of Mountnorris, 9th Viscount Valentia (1770-1844) who went to India in 1790. He was an enthusiast of natural history paintings and also a travel writer. He stayed with Lord Wellesley when in Calcutta in 1803 and presented him with at least two paintings of birds, now in his collection at the India Office Library, which bear his Indian seal.
