The artist was the son of Field-Marshall Sir George Pollock, 1st Bt. who served in the Bengal Infantry. Frederick Pollock served in the Royal Engineers in India in 1841-2, St Helena in 1842, Aden in 1844 and Germany in 1843. His work is described as being in the tradition of William Callow. A Fakir is a Muslim Sufi who teaches Islam and survives on alms. Pollocks depicts this Fakir on the banks of the river Jumna with the Taj Mahal beyond.
